Unions to rally in Pilbara region against foreign labour
13-07-2012
Rallies denouncing the federal government's enterprise migration agreements (EMAs) are planned for Western Australia's Pilbara region as the mining union continues to dispute claims of a lack of skilled domestic labour.
The Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) says combined union and community town rallies will be held simultaneously in Karratha and Port Hedland on Sunday, decrying Gina Rinehart's plan to import foreign labour for her Roy Hill iron ore project.
"Unions see this as the thin edge of the wedge," the CFMEU said in a statement.
"Another 30 odd projects are eligible to apply for EMAs."
The CFMEU said stories abounded of skilled domestic resource sector workers who found it hard to get jobs on mining and energy projects.
"There is plenty of labour in this state and throughout Australia ready and able to do the work," the union said.
CFMEU national secretary Michael O'Connor said unemployment figures released on Thursday demonstrated the need to resist the "Rineharting" of the workforce.
The figures showed unemployment fell in resources-focused states but rose in others.
The CFMEU also dismissed as a publicity stunt Rinehart's pledge to spend $26 million training local workers in exchange for the EMA.
Roy Hill spokesmen were being sought for comment.
